The Performance Doctor: Life On Your Terms
Build your business around your life, not your life around your business.
When I started private practice, I was told many things including:
You won’t have time for vacations for at least 10 years.
You need to work weekends
Work early mornings
Work late evenings
Work all day
Always say yes
Don’t turn anyone away.
Take insurance if you want to make good money
Take PI cases for good income
But I was never told to:
Charge your worth as a doctor
Leverage your value as a doctor
Budget for vacation time in practice
Manage family time and business time
Plan your exit strategy
Everyone is so enthralled with the idea of building and making money, that many forget to live their life. Soon everything they do, is work. I’ve been there, didn’t like it. I don’t want to be there.
If working all day, is everything you want to do… go for it.
I want to run a profitable business, spend 80% of my life with my family and friends. Watch my future kids grow, attend their events, take the unscheduled vacation, go on that exciting hunt, and not worry about debt or money.
I’ve learned more through trial and error than from the business courses I paid for (Part 1 / Part 2). I don’t want to say I didn’t learn anything back then. Looking back at it… they had great resources, just poor coaching and guidance.
To think that one told me to lower my prices to keep them “competitive”… I’m even more expensive now.
Another told me I needed to charge more because “people are easy to sell to.”
The only thing they had right was the idea that 95% of entrepreneurs don’t own a business. The business owns them.
Think about it… .
You take a vacation, and you lose revenue.
You have an accident and you are losing revenue and profit.
No wonder why so many chiropractors don’t take a vacation the first 10 years in practice. Everything is tied down to one person.
When I started my office I didn’t want to be chained to my business.
I didn’t want my business to dictate whether or not I could close the office for a week.
I didn’t want my business to dictate how much time I got to spend with my family.
I didn’t want my business to dictate how much family time I’d miss.
I made the decision early on, that I’d build my business as an extension of my life. To supplement my life, not control it.
For the last 8 years, every 15 weeks I take a week off to spend with family and friends without worrying about either of my businesses. It’s AMAZING!
If you are feeling stuck. I’ve been there.
I don’t ever want to go back, and I want you to enjoy your practice as much as I enjoy mine.
Remember:
We charge for our expertise, not our time.
We charge for our value, not for the service.
We charge for their outcomes, not the sale.
